York Ductwork Repair: The Houston Owner’s Guide

York ductwork repair in Houston typically runs between $150 and $650 installed, depending on whether we’re sealing a separated joint, replacing a crushed return drop, or rebuilding a section of deteriorated plenum. Most repairs we complete the same day we diagnose, because our trucks carry the common York-compatible duct fittings, collars, mastic, and metal stock needed for the job. The typical homeowner discovers the problem in one of two ways: a room that never cools or heats properly no matter what the thermostat says, or a utility bill that climbed steadily through a Houston summer while the system ran longer and longer to hold the same indoor temperature.

Ductwork is the delivery system for everything your York equipment produces. When it leaks, tears, or separates, you’re paying to condition attic air or the inside of a wall cavity. Victor Mancini put it plainly during a call in Meyerland a few years back: if a third of your airflow never reaches the living room, you’re not fixing the AC by replacing the AC. You fix the ducts.

Which York Models This Applies To

Ductwork itself isn’t model-specific the way a control board or blower motor is, but the connection points matter. York residential systems using the Affinity, LX, and Latitude series air handlers or furnaces all connect to ductwork through standardized openings, typically 16×20, 16×25, or 20×20 plenum dimensions depending on the unit’s tonnage and airflow rating. Where we see real variation is in the transition pieces: a York Affinity 5-ton air handler moving 2,000 CFM needs a different return drop configuration than a 2-ton Latitude unit, and the wrong transition starves the system or makes it whistle.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most supply houses don’t mention: York equipment typically ships with a factory filter rack and a specific plenum flange depth. Aftermarket universal plenums often sit too shallow, which offsets the coil or heat exchanger opening and forces the installer to bend metal into a shape that strangles airflow. We cut and form our transitions on site to match the exact York opening because a half-inch misalignment here costs you measurable efficiency for the life of the system.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for duct components: York doesn’t manufacture sheet metal or flex duct, so “OEM” isn’t really the right frame for this category. What matters is gauge, sealant, and support. For rigid duct we use 26-gauge or heavier galvanized steel in unconditioned Houston attics. For flexible runs we use R-8 insulated flex, not the R-4.2 that budget contractors install to save a few dollars. The material difference shows up in your summer electric bill and in whether the duct sags and separates after three years of attic heat.

Signs Your York Ductwork Repair Is Failing

  • Rooms that stay 6 to 10 degrees off from the rest of the house. This almost always traces to a disconnected or collapsed branch run serving that zone. The air is being delivered somewhere other than the room.
  • A dusty, musty smell when the system first cycles on. Leaks on the return side pull attic air, insulation fibers, and Houston’s year-round humidity into your conditioned space instead of pulling air from your living areas.
  • A blower that runs constantly but never satisfies the thermostat. The system is moving the right volume of air, but a significant share of it is dumping into an unconditioned space through a torn flex duct or open joint.
  • High humidity inside during the summer. A return leak pulling Houston’s humid attic air into the system overwhelms the coil’s dehumidification capacity. The AC works harder and the house still feels sticky.
  • A visible sag, tear, or collapsed section in the attic flex runs. Gravity plus Houston attic heat degrades duct strapping over time. When support straps fail, flex duct kinks and airflow can drop by 50% or more in that run.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Ductwork repair pricing in Houston depends on access, material, and scope. A single separated joint reseal with mastic and new strapping runs $150 to $250. Replacing a crushed flex run runs $200 to $400. A plenum rebuild or return drop replacement typically lands between $350 and $650. Full-system duct replacement is a different scope and gets quoted after a Manual J and Manual D review, not a drive-by estimate.

Repair Scope Typical Houston Installed Range
Single joint seal and re-strap $150 – $250
Replace one collapsed flex run $200 – $400
Return drop replacement $300 – $550
Plenum rebuild (supply or return) $400 – $650

Every repair includes labor, materials, mastic sealing to code, and cleanup of the work area. The written price comes to you before we touch a screw. And the work is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we return and make it right at no charge. The guarantee is on paper when the technician leaves, not something we mention on the phone and hope you remember.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely do a visual check: go up with a flashlight when the system is running and look for obvious separations, sagging sections, or torn outer jacket on flex runs. You can check that registers are open and not blocked by furniture. What you should not do is crawl across ceiling joists in a 140-degree Houston attic to re-secure or re-seal ductwork. The heat risk alone is serious, and one misstep through a ceiling is a much more expensive problem than the duct repair.

There’s also a tool gap. Proper duct sealing means mastic applied to code, not duct tape, plus hangers sized for the duct diameter and load. A DIY patch that fails silently costs you cooling season after season. If you found something in the attic, call (832) 371-9862 and tell us what you saw. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it warrants a service call or whether you can watch it for a while.
