Trane builds equipment that handles Houston’s swampy summers better than most, and we provide Trane service in Houston every week. Cold Harbour Heating and Air Houston is an independent Trane service provider, not a factory-authorized dealer, which means we work for you, not for Trane. We fix run-tru units in Katy, variable-speed XV20i systems in the Heights, and everything between, with real numbers on the table before any tool comes out. Call (832) 371-9862 for a free estimate.
Houston’s climate punishes air conditioning: 90-plus degree days for five months running, humidity that doesn’t quit after sunset, and salty Gulf air chewing through outdoor coils. Trane equipment holds up in that environment. But every machine breaks eventually, and when a Trane system goes down in July, a homeowner needs our AC Repair services, not a generic service call. That’s what we do. Victor Mancini, our owner, learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College and has spent the better part of two decades on Houston service calls, from quiet Sugar Land subdivisions to those older slab-foundation homes near Memorial Park. He’ll tell you what the system is doing and what it actually needs.
Why Trust Cold Harbour Heating and Air Houston for Your Trane HVAC?
We work on Trane equipment constantly. XV20i and XV18 variable-speed systems, XL18i and XL16i two-stage units, XR16 and XR14 single-stage condensers, plus the RunTru line that Trane sells at a more modest price point. That means our technicians know the failure patterns: which boards fail after lightning, which coils freeze up from marginal airflow, which drains clog first in an attic installation. You don’t have to explain your system to us; we’ve seen it before.
Every Trane repair we do comes with the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the repair fails within a full year, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s part of The Kingswell Way: say the price before the work, show up in the window given, leave the place cleaner than found, put the guarantee in writing, and come back if it fails. We’re independently owned and operated as part of the Kingswell network, founded in 2003, and we’ve held to those five values since the beginning. When Victor shows up at your door, he’s background-checked, uniformed, and ready to explain what he finds in plain English.

Common Trane HVAC Problems We Fix in Houston
- Frozen evaporator coils on XR16 and XR14 units. Oversized single-stage systems are common in Houston because contractors sized for peak afternoon heat and not much else. When the system is too big, it short-cycles and doesn’t remove humidity; when airflow drops, the coil ices over. We measure static pressure and refrigerant charge before we replace parts, because a new coil won’t fix a duct problem.
- E01/E03 communication faults on XV20i systems. The variable-speed inverter drives and communicating thermostats are smart, but the low-voltage wiring that connects them is fragile. Houston attics get hot enough to soften wire insulation, and rodents like the taste. A squirrel chewing through thermostat wire can throw an E01 fault that looks exactly like a failed control board. We check the wiring first, which has saved more than one homeowner from buying a thousand-dollar board they didn’t need.
- Failed capacitors on single-stage XR condensing units. Houston’s spring thunderstorms bring lightning and brownouts, and capacitors eat the surge. After a big storm rolls through town, we get a wave of no-cool calls from neighborhoods with overhead power lines. It’s usually the capacitor or the contactor, two of the cheapest parts in the system. We carry replacements on the truck and can often have the unit running the same day.
- Clogged condensate drains causing attic water damage. Houston’s humidity means an AC pulls gallons of water out of the air every day. Attic-installed air handlers and furnaces sit in a vented, hot attic, and when the drain line clogs with algae or mold, water backs up and leaks through the ceiling. This is a recurring Houston problem, not a Trane defect, but certain Trane coil configurations make the drain pan harder to access than it should be.
- Inverter board failures on XV18i and XV20i heat pumps. Variable-speed inverter boards are brilliant when they work, but they’re sensitive to voltage swings. Houston’s grid does not always deliver clean power, and a hard brownout can stress an inverter. When a board genuinely fails, we install Trane OEM replacements, because aftermarket inverter boards are a gamble.
Trane Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We use genuine Trane OEM parts when the stakes are high: inverters, control boards, compressors, and anything still under manufacturer warranty. For high-wear electrical components like capacitors and contactors, we often use Amrad capacitors or Mars contactors. They cost less than Trane-branded equivalents, and in our experience they fail at the same rate. We’ll tell you which we recommend and why, before you commit to anything.
On a Trane unit that’s more than about 12 years old with a dead compressor or a cracked heat exchanger, we usually recommend replacement. Swapping a compressor into an aging system doesn’t fix the worn-out coils, the tired blower motor, or the refrigerant charge that’s been leaking for a season. Houston’s heat shortens AC lifespans compared to cooler climates; a 14-year-old Trane here has done more hard work than a 20-year-old unit in Ohio. When repair still makes sense, we say so. When replacement is the honest call, we’ll put a written fixed price in your hands and set a firm install date. Call (832) 371-9862 and we’ll walk you through what we find.
Our Trane Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis. We arrive in the window we gave you, in a marked vehicle. The technician checks the thermostat settings, measures the temperature drop across the coil, checks the refrigerant pressures, and tests the capacitors, contactors, and control boards. On Trane communicating systems like the XV20i, we pull fault codes from the thermostat and verify them against what we see at the board.
- 2
Written quote. Before any tool touches the unit, you get a written price. Not an estimate range, not a maybe. The number we hand you is the number you pay. If you choose not to proceed, you pay only the diagnostic fee, which we’ll tell you before we schedule the visit.
- 3
Repair or installation. We stock common Trane parts on the truck: capacitors, contactors, pressure switches, ignition parts, and condensate pumps. For bigger jobs, like an inverter board or a compressor, we schedule the return visit and get the exact OEM part. Mini split installs and full system replacements get a load calculation first, not a rule-of-thumb guess.
- 4
Testing. After the repair, we run the system through a full cycle. Heating and cooling, if both are operational. We watch the refrigerant pressures, check the temperature split, and confirm the system cycles off and back on properly. For Trane communicating systems, we clear the fault history and run a system test through the thermostat.
- 5
Written guarantee. Before we leave, you get the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the repair fails inside a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No phone tag, no debate, no re-diagnosis fee.

AfterTrane Products We Service & Install in Houston
We service the full Trane residential lineup: the XV20i and XV18 variable-speed units, the XL18i and XL16i two-stage systems, the XR16 and XR14 single-stage condensers and heat pumps, and the RunTru by Trane line. We also install Trane mini splits, which are a practical choice for Houston bungalows and garage conversions where running ductwork would mean tearing out walls or ceilings. We stock common Trane electrical parts, capacitors, contactors, and condensate pumps locally, which means faster repair times on the hottest days of the year, including for customers needing Trane in League City.
We Also Service These Brands
Trane isn’t the only brand our technicians work on. We’re trained across nine major residential HVAC lines, including Carrier and Lennox, so our team shows up ready to work on whatever is already in your home. You don’t need to call a different company because your system is a Goodman or a Rheem. One phone call covers it.
FAQs – Trane HVAC Service in Houston
E01 means the thermostat has lost communication with the system’s control board. After a thunderstorm, it’s often not a board failure at all: a power surge can briefly interrupt the low-voltage circuit, or a nearby lightning strike can damage the thermostat wire run. We check the wiring and the surge protection before condemning a board, because a new wiring harness costs a fraction of a new control board. If the board is truly dead, we install a genuine Trane replacement. Call (832) 371-9862 and we’ll diagnose it properly.
Probably not, unless the compressor is still under Trane’s warranty and the rest of the system is in excellent shape. A six-year-old XR16 has spent six Houston summers running hard. If the compressor failed, there’s often an underlying cause: a refrigerant leak that starved it of oil, a failed start component, or a control issue. Replacing only the compressor without fixing the root cause means you’ll likely be doing it again. We’ll show you the numbers for compressor replacement versus a new system, and you decide.
Yes. A Trane mini split system uses a small outdoor unit connected to one or more indoor wall-mounted heads by a thin refrigerant line set. The line set runs through a small opening in the wall, typically hidden behind the indoor unit or routed along an exterior wall with a slim duct. For older pier-and-beam bungalows in the Heights or Montrose, mini splits also address the real problem: no existing ductwork, or ducts so leaky they waste hundreds of dollars a summer. We also offer Pasadena Trane service for homes in that area. We install Trane mini splits and we do it with a clean job site, start to finish.
Short-cycling in mild weather is common on single-stage furnaces that were sized for a colder climate than Houston actually gets. The furnace heats the house to temperature in a few minutes, shuts off, then cycles again a few minutes later. It’s not a defect; it’s a sizing mismatch. Sometimes the fix is a thermostat adjustment, sometimes it’s a blower speed change. We can check the temperature rise across the heat exchanger and tell you what’s actually happening before anyone sells you parts you don’t need.
On a properly sized variable-speed system, yes. A variable-speed XL18i will ramp down and run continuously at low speed to maintain temperature and humidity, rather than blasting on and off like a single-stage unit. What’s not normal is running continuously on high stage or failing to hit the setpoint. If the house holds temperature and the system is quiet, it’s doing its job. If it runs all day and the house is still 78 when the thermostat says 74, that’s a service call. Call (832) 371-9862 if you’re not sure which one you have.
