Rheem AC Installation in Houston: What to Know First

A new Rheem central air system in Houston runs $3,500 to $7,500 installed, depending on the model line, your home’s square footage, and whether ductwork needs replacing. Most Rheem installs take one full day, and we keep the price fixed before any work begins. If you’re weighing a Rheem replacement against a repair, or installing central air for the first time, call (832) 371-9862 and we’ll give you a straight number, not a sales pitch.

How Rheem Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

Rheem builds dependable equipment, but every brand has its patterns. After running service calls across Houston for two decades, here’s what we see most often on Rheem systems, and what it means for your installation.

  • Copeland scroll compressor wear on older Rheem Classic series. The Classic line (Rheem’s entry-level central units) tends to run fine for 12 to 15 years, but when the compressor finally goes, it’s usually due to heat strain on hot Houston afternoons. A failed compressor on a 14-year-old Classic almost always means full system replacement, not a compressor swap. We’ll show you the math side by side before you decide.
  • Piston metering device sticking on Rheem Endeavor and RA14 models. Rheem uses a piston-type metering device on many mid-tier condensers. Houston humidity pushes these units hard, and when the piston sticks, cooling drops off fast. During an install, we always check the metering device on the new unit before charging the system, because a new unit with a stuck piston will underperform from day one.
  • Aluminum evaporator coil leaks on Rheem Achiever series units from 2014 to 2019. That era of Achiever coils had a higher-than-normal weep rate at the U-bends. If you’re replacing an Achiever from those years, the leak is almost never worth chasing. We install new Rheem systems with all-aluminum coils, which hold up better against Houston’s salty Gulf air.
  • Capacitor and contactor failures on Rheem Prestige and Classic outdoor units. These are the most common mid-life failures on any brand, Rheem included. If your outdoor unit hums but the fan won’t spin, it’s usually a capacitor. We carry Rheem-spec capacitors on the truck, so a repair is often same-day while you weigh replacement.
  • Undersized returns on Rheem systems installed by other contractors. East Houston neighborhoods like Pasadena and Baytown have a lot of 1960s-era slab homes with undersized return ducts. A Rheem system pushing more airflow than the return can handle will ice up and short-cycle. When we install a Rheem unit, we measure the return before we quote, and we’ll tell you if the ductwork needs a resize.

Our Rheem AC Installation Process

“Tell me what the system is doing — and I’ll tell you exactly what it needs.” That’s how I start every Rheem call, and the installation work follows the same rule. Here’s how it goes, start to finish.

  1. 1
We measure the home, not just the old unit. Square footage, window orientation, ceiling height, and duct sizing all go into a load calculation before we recommend any Rheem model. Guessing at tonnage is how systems end up short-cycling or running nonstop.
  2. 2
We give you a written fixed price. Before any tools come out, you get a line-item quote with the model number, the labor, and any duct or electrical work included. That number does not move at the door.
  3. 3
We recover the old refrigerant and remove the old system. Old R-22 or R-410A gets recovered properly, not vented. We haul the old equipment away and leave the pad clean.
  4. 4
We set the new Rheem unit and braze the lines with nitrogen purge. Brazing without nitrogen leaves oxidation inside the copper, which shortens compressor life. We purge every install.
  5. 5
We pressure test, vacuum, and charge to spec. The system gets pulled to a deep vacuum and charged to the exact subcooling target for the model, not just “to the gauge.” Houston heat demands that precision.
  6. 6
We test in cooling mode, then you get the Kingswell Guarantee in writing. Four promises: the price before the work, the arrival window we gave, a clean job site, and a 365-day written guarantee on the work. You leave with it in hand, not in an email you’ll never open.

What Rheem AC Installation Costs in Houston

Here are real price ranges for the Rheem installs we do most often in Houston:

  • Rheem Classic 14 SEER2, 3-ton: $3,500–$4,800 installed. Basic, dependable, and furnace-matched for Houston cooling loads.
  • Rheem Endeavor 16 SEER2, 3.5-ton: $4,800–$6,200 installed. The sweet spot for most 2,000–2,400 sq ft Houston homes.
  • Rheem Prestige 18+ SEER2, variable speed, 4–5 ton: $6,200–$7,500 installed. Quiet, efficient, and built for homes that run the AC from March to November.

What moves the price: ductwork condition, electrical panel capacity, attic access, and whether you’re replacing a furnace or heat pump at the same time. We’ll give you an exact number after a walkthrough, and the estimate is free. Call (832) 371-9862.
