Lennox mini-split installation in Houston typically runs $3,500 to $7,500 for a complete system, depending on the number of indoor heads, the condenser size in BTUs, and how much line-set work your home needs. We stock Lennox-compatible components and install partners on our trucks, so most complete installations are scheduled within a few days rather than weeks. When a Houston homeowner calls us about a Lennox mini-split, it’s usually one of three pictures: the system is short-cycling in August, the compressor won’t kick on after a storm, or a single indoor head quit cooling while the rest of the house is fine. Each has a different fix and a different price tag, and we’ll walk through all three here.
One thing up front: Cold Harbour Heating and Air Houston is an independent heating and cooling company. We’re not affiliated with Lennox, but our technicians are trained on Lennox equipment specifically, along with Carrier, Trane, and six other major residential brands. That matters because Lennox mini-splits use proprietary communication wiring that generic parts won’t talk to, and a tech who doesn’t know that will burn a full afternoon chasing a ghost.
Which Lennox Models This Applies To
We install and service the full Lennox mini-split line, which breaks down into three families. The MLA and MWMA series are the entry-level single-zone and multi-zone units you’ll see in garage conversions, sunrooms, and older Houston homes where ductwork was never run. The MPB and MPX series are the mid-tier heat-pump mini-splits, which handle cooling and heating, useful in Houston when a January cold snap dips into the thirties. The VEA and VRF series are the variable-refrigerant-flow commercial-grade units we occasionally see in large custom homes in River Oaks or Memorial-area additions.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most Houston homeowners don’t know: Lennox mini-split indoor heads are not interchangeable across series lines. A previous-generation MLA head will not pair with a newer MPB condenser, even if the BTU rating matches. The communication language changed between generations. Before any installation, we pull the model number off both the condenser data plate and the indoor head, then cross-reference against Lennox’s pairing chart. If a homeowner already bought a head or condenser online assuming compatibility, we’ll verify it before we touch anything, and if it won’t pair, we’ll say so plainly instead of installing something that throws error codes in three weeks.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for boards, sensors, and communication modules, we strongly recommend genuine Lennox OEM parts. The aftermarket equivalents for Lennox mini-split electronics are hit-or-miss, and when we’re talking about a system that runs 14 to 16 hours a day in a Houston August, the margin of error is thin. For line sets, mounting brackets, and drain components, quality aftermarket parts are fine and save real money.

Signs Your Lennox Mini-Split Installation Is Failing
Every week we get calls from Houston homeowners describing the same set of problems. Here are the five most common, with what’s actually happening under the hood:
- The indoor head blows air, but it’s not cold. This usually points to a refrigerant leak at the flare connections, which is the most frequent failure point on any mini-split installation. Houston’s heat and humidity accelerate flare corrosion, especially on outdoor connections where the copper meets the service valve.
- The system short-cycles: runs ten minutes, shuts off, runs again. On Lennox mini-splits, this often traces to a failing thermistor on the indoor coil or a clogged condensate drain triggering the float switch. Either will confuse the control board into thinking the coil is icing or the pan is full when it isn’t.
- One indoor head works fine, another does nothing. On multi-zone Lennox systems, a dead head usually means the electronic expansion valve in that head has failed or the communication wire between that head and the condenser has a break. That wire is low-voltage but it carries a digital signal; a loose wire nut will drop that head off the network entirely.
- The condenser fan doesn’t spin, but you can hear the compressor hum. This is the capacitor situation, plain and simple. Houston’s heat kills capacitors faster than any other single component, full stop. When the capacitor goes, the fan can’t start and the condenser overheats within minutes.
- Water dripping from the indoor head onto your floor. Almost always a clogged drain line or a cracked drain pan. Houston’s humidity means these systems pull gallons of condensate in a day, and if that water can’t leave through the line, it finds the next exit, which is often your ceiling or wall.
Victor Mancini puts it this way: “Tell me what the system is doing, and I’ll tell you exactly what it needs.” We’d rather have a homeowner call us with a clear description of the symptom than a guess at the part, because a symptom narrows the diagnosis. A guess at a part usually means buying a component that wasn’t the problem.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
A complete Lennox mini-split installation in Houston runs $3,500 to $7,500, and here’s what moves that number:
- Number of indoor heads. A single-zone system (one condenser, one head) sits at the low end. A four-zone system (one condenser, four heads) is a very different job with more line sets, more electrical, more labor.
- BTU capacity. A 9,000 BTU unit for a bedroom costs less than a 36,000 BTU condenser sized for a big open-concept living area or a garage conversion in Katy.
- Line-set length and routing. Runs over 25 feet, or runs that have to snake through attics and wall cavities in older Houston homes, add labor and material cost. The line set itself is copper tubing that carries refrigerant between the condenser and the indoor heads.
- Electrical work. Most mini-splits need a dedicated circuit from the panel. If your panel is full, or the condenser sits far from the breaker box, that’s additional electrical labor.
Every quote we give in Houston includes the equipment, the line set, the electrical connection, the condensate drainage, the wall or floor mounting, and the full startup and test sequence. The written price you get before work begins is the price you pay, period. We hand it to you on paper before a single tool comes out of the truck. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s not a courtesy: it’s a promise we’ve kept since 2003. The installation itself carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if any part of the installation fails within a full year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That guarantee is written down and handed to you before we leave.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. There are things a Houston homeowner can safely check before calling us, and there are things that absolutely should not be touched. On the safe side: verify the breaker is on, confirm the remote’s batteries aren’t dead, check that the outdoor condenser isn’t covered in leaves or blocked by a fence that traps heat, and look at whether the condensate line is visibly clogged where it exits the house. Those are all reasonable homeowner checks.
What you should not attempt: anything involving refrigerant, the flare connections, the communication wiring, or the capacitor. Refrigerant work requires an EPA Section 608 certification, period, and the flare fittings on a Lennox mini-split are torqued to a specific specification that takes a torque wrench and experience to get right. Over-torque it and you crack the fitting. Under-torque it and you get a leak that empties the system over a Houston summer. The capacitor holds a charge that can hurt you even with the breaker off if it hasn’t been discharged. If any of these are the problem, call us at (832) 371-9862. We answer the phone with a live person, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a job worth scheduling or something you can handle yourself.
FAQs
In Houston’s climate, a properly installed Lennox mini-split typically lasts 12 to 15 years before major component failure. The defining factor is the quality of the original flare connections and the consistency of annual maintenance. Houston’s heat and humidity age compressor electronics faster than the national average, which is why we recommend a spring tune-up before the cooling season hits full stride. Call (832) 371-9862 to schedule a tune-up, $80 to $200 flat rate.
Yes, and often it should be. A failed capacitor, thermistor, or drain component is straightforward to replace, usually $150 to $650 for AC repair on mini-split systems, depending on the part and how much labor it takes to access. The replacement-versus-repair question really only matters when the compressor fails or the system is more than ten years old and leaking refrigerant repeatedly. We’ll show you the failed part and explain why it failed before we recommend anything. Call (832) 371-9862 and we’ll give you an honest read.
A single-zone installation in Houston is typically a one-day job from start to finish: mount the condenser, run the line set, connect electrical, hang the indoor head, evacuate the lines, and test. Multi-zone systems take two to three days depending on how many indoor heads and how much line-set routing the house requires. We give you a firm installation date on the written quote, and we show up in the window we promised.
We keep the most common Lennox mini-split replacement parts stocked on our service trucks: capacitors, thermistors, drain components, flare fittings, communication boards for the MLA and MPB series, and common remote controls. If your part isn’t on the truck, we can typically have it in hand within one to three business days through our Houston-area suppliers. We also keep common parts for Carrier and Trane systems, since plenty of Houston homes run a mix of brands.
