Get your free estimateCarrier Mini-Split Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you have a Carrier mini-split that needs a new installation, we stock the Carrier-compatible parts your system needs, and we install them for a flat, written price most Houston homeowners pay $3500 – $7500 for, depending on system size. That price covers the full installation, not just the part. Most Carrier mini-split installations in Houston are booked within 48 hours of your call, and we’ll give you the price before a single tool comes out.
The way most owners discover their mini-split installation has failed is abrupt: the indoor unit blows warm air while the outdoor unit runs constantly, or nobody runs at all. In Houston’s humidity, a failed mini-split installation often shows up on the first 95-degree afternoon in May, and it always seems to happen on a weekend. We know the pattern. Victor Mancini and our crew have been untangling Carrier mini-split failures across Greater Houston for years, from Sugar Land to the older homes near Memorial Park.
Which Carrier Models This Applies To
This page covers Carrier’s ductless and mini-split lines: the Performance series (38MGRQ outdoor units), the Infinity series (38MIV / 38MBRC), and the Comfort series (38MARB). Each series uses different sizing for its line sets, flare fittings, and communication wiring, so the installation part has to match the series exactly. A Performance-series flare nut does not seat correctly on an Infinity line set, and that’s the kind of mismatch that causes a slow refrigerant leak you won’t notice for months.
For Carrier specifically, we recommend OEM parts when the installation involves the inverter board, the compressor, or the EEV (electronic expansion valve). Those components are tuned to Carrier’s exact voltage ranges and communication protocols. For simpler items like line sets, drain hoses, and mounting brackets, a quality aftermarket equivalent works fine and can save you $200 – $400 on the total job. We’ll always tell you which side of that line your part falls on, and the written price will show it.
One note up front: Cold Harbour Heating and Air Houston is an independent service provider, not a Carrier dealer or affiliate. That means we answer to you, not to a manufacturer’s sales quota. We stock Carrier parts because Houston has a lot of Carrier systems, but we also carry Trane and Lennox parts on the truck for the same reason.

Signs Your Carrier Mini-Split Installation Is Failing
- Outdoor unit runs, indoor unit blows warm. This usually points to a refrigerant leak at a flare fitting or a failed reversing valve. The installation part has to be replaced, and the system recharged to Carrier’s exact spec, not just topped off.
- No power to either unit. Carrier mini-splits protect themselves. A failed inverter board or a shorted communication wire will trip the system offline rather than run damaged.
- Ice on the line set or coil. In Houston’s wet air, a low refrigerant charge shows up as frost first. This means a leak somewhere in the installation, often at a flare connection that was over-tightened or never properly torqued.
- Water dripping inside or staining the wall below the indoor unit. The condensate drain line is part of the installation. If it’s pitched wrong or clogged from Houston’s dust and humidity, water backs up and finds the wall.
- System short-cycles, never reaching set temperature. A failing EEV or a compressor that’s been running against a refrigerant restriction will cut out early. Victor’s diagnostic go-to is to check the running amperage against the Carrier spec sheet; if the numbers don’t align, the part gets replaced.
Every one of these symptoms is a reason to stop running the system and get it looked at. Running a mini-split with a leak or a failing board turns a $300 installation repair into a $2,000 compressor job.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, Carrier mini-split installation work runs $3500 – $7500 installed. The range comes down to system capacity, the specific part that failed, and whether we’re replacing a single component or doing a full fresh installation with new line sets and mounting hardware. Here’s how it breaks down:
- Single installation component replacement (flare fittings, drain line, mounting bracket, communication wire): $150 – $650, parts and labor included.
- Refrigerant leak repair with recharge (flare fitting replacement plus R-410A recharge to Carrier spec): $400 – $900.
- Full mini-split system installation (new indoor and outdoor unit, line set, drain, mount, electrical): $3500 – $7500.
- Inverter board or EEV replacement on an existing system: $500 – $1,200 depending on the series.
Every price is written down and handed to you before we start. It doesn’t change at the door. And every installation repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails inside a full year, we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s on paper, not verbal.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things: make sure the breaker isn’t tripped, clean the washable filters, and confirm the remote’s batteries aren’t dead. Those account for maybe one in ten “my mini-split won’t run” calls we get in Houston.
But anything involving refrigerant, flare fittings, inverter boards, or electrical wiring is not a DIY job. Mini-split systems run on 240 volts and contain refrigerant under pressure that can cause frostbite or worse if mishandled. Flare connections have to be torqued to spec and leak-tested; over-tighten one and you’re back in the same spot in a month. We’ve redone enough DIY flare jobs across Houston to say this plainly: the money saved doing it yourself usually gets spent twice on the repair. Call us at (832) 371-9862 and we’ll give you a written price before we touch anything.
FAQs
A properly installed Carrier mini-split lasts 12 – 15 years in Houston’s climate, but the installation components (line set, flare fittings, drain) typically need attention at the 8 – 10 year mark. Houston’s humidity and heat accelerate wear on seals and insulation. Call (832) 371-9862 if you’re seeing signs of installation failure.
Most installation failures are repairable: a leaking flare fitting, a clogged drain line, a bad inverter board. Full replacement is only called for when the compressor itself has failed or the system is over 12 years old and leaking in multiple places. We’ll show you exactly why we’re recommending one path over the other. Call (832) 371-9862 for an honest assessment.
A single installation component replacement takes 2 – 4 hours on site. A full mini-split system installation is a one-day job in most Houston homes. We’ll tell you the window when we book, and Victor or one of our crew will be there in it. Call (832) 371-9862 to schedule.
We stock common Carrier installation parts on the truck: flare fittings, line sets, drain components, mounting hardware, and communication wire. Inverter boards and EEVs for specific Carrier series are typically ordered same-day from our Houston suppliers and arrive by the next morning. Call (832) 371-9862 and we’ll confirm what’s on hand for your model.
